MUNICH, Germany, June 1, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Sono Motors, the company aiming to revolutionize the future of solar transportation, is expanding its solar business by entering the growing refrigerated trailer market with its proprietary Sono Solar technology, further reducing Global fossil fuel emissions. The company signed a procurement contract with The Reefer Group, an international leader in refrigerated vehicles, expanding the total number of global partners for Sono Motors’ solar business unit to more than 17. As part of this collaboration, the two companies will manufacture the first trailer together with CHEREAU SAS, the French subsidiary of the Reefer Group, for extensive testing to further evaluate the technical and economical aspects of integrating custom solar solutions for high-volume series vehicles feasibility. Solar integration will provide an additional 9.8 kW peak to the trailer’s cooling unit, providing fuel savings of around 3,400 litres (up to 8,475 litres in peak conditions) and potentially reducing local CO2 emissions by around 9 tonnes/year per vehicle Compared to trailers with diesel powered cooling.1

Solar Trailer to Premiere at IAA Transport 2022
Sono Motors will equip existing CHEREAU trailers with 54 solar modules on the roof and sides using a VaPV (Vehicle-mounted Photovoltaic) process developed for cargo vehicles such as CHEREAU refrigerated semi-trailers. The high-efficiency automotive-grade solar modules have a footprint of 58.9 square meters and can deliver a total of up to 9.8 kW of peak energy at peak performance. The solar energy will run the cooling unit by charging the batteries. This could potentially save around 3,400 litres of fuel compared to a trailer equipped with diesel-powered cooling and potentially reduce local CO2 emissions by around 9 tonnes per vehicle per year. The solar trailer “CO2 backpack”, the emissions generated during production, emits about 6.5 tons of CO2 at a time, which can be offset after just under a year of operation. The trailer is scheduled to debut at the IAA Transport 2022 in Hannover, and will be followed by intensive testing in several months of field trials by French CHEREAU customers. Part of the testing process was to validate energy gain and fuel savings figures based on internal calculations, including weather and system efficiency assumptions.

For high volume production, Sono Motors is developing its unique solar technology on refrigerated semi-trailers. Based on innovative technology, energy savings of up to 80% can be achieved compared to diesel.2
