‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ episodes 1 and 2 recaps: Easter eggs you may have missed

creator of Obi-Wan Kenobi a great job has been done Fast-paced, engaging, and most importantly, character-driven adventureso let’s do a (spoiler) in-depth recap of episodes 1 and 2, including character arcs and Easter eggs (and a dramatic Star Wars cameo).

Ewan McGregor plays the Jedi General, no longer the puerile youth from the prequel film, but no longer the grey-bearded old man played by Alec Guinness in the original 1977 film. With ties to both the prequels and the original trilogy, the show enriches Star Wars continuity with engaging new elements.

The first two episodes of the show’s six episodes are now available, with more episodes airing every Wednesday from June 1 to June 22.If you haven’t seen the show, be aware that the first episode begins with a scene where children are attacked, which may upset viewers Texas school shooting.

When was the last time we saw Obi-Wan Kenobi?

The series starts with a recap of the prequel, which could save you six hours of life (I’m kidding, they’re not that bad). Obi-Wan Kenobi, Jedi Master and enemy of the evil Galactic Empire, began in the prequels as Liam Neeson’s ill-fated Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn’s apprentice, who discovered a very young Ana in the desert world of Tatooine Golden Skywalker. After Qui-Gon’s death, Kenobi tried to train Anakin, but couldn’t stop his troubled young disciple from being influenced by the evil Emperor Palpatine. Eventually, Anakin succumbed to the dark side, especially after the death of his love, Padmé Amidala.

The last time they met was on the Highlands, where Obi-Wan cut off Anakin’s leg and let him melt in a volcano. Anakin’s last words to Obi-Wan were “I hate you!” Obi-Wan replied sadly, “You are my brother, Anakin. I love you.”

These moments, these deaths, still haunt Obi-Wan’s nightmares. But the climax of Episode 2 is a direct hit on personal relationships. We know that Anakan was rebuilt as Darth Vader in black helmet and asthma, more machine than man. But Obi-Wan doesn’t know! This greatly ups the stakes on his mission to protect Anakin’s twin children: young Leia is adopted by Alderaan’s Galactic Senator Bel Organa, and young Luke is sent to Tatooine’s Uncle Owen and Beru Aunt lives.

Ten years later, the miniseries begins…

What is Obi-Wan doing?

Mainly just hanging out in the desert and watching Luke. We start over 10 years after Revenge of the Sith and 9 years before A New Hope, after the Jedi Order was all but wiped out. Obi-Wan went into hiding, calling himself Ben, and grudgingly lived a humble life as a meatpacker on the corpse of a giant desert creature. He even turned down the desperate pleas of another hunted Jedi young Nari (played by actor, writer and director Benny Safdie).

Luke, though still a young man, already showed signs of unease in the first film that drove him to new adventures. Watching Obi-Wan run down his spine as he plays a pilot echoes young Anakin’s pod game in The Phantom Menace. We know this foreshadows Luke’s later role as the pilot who destroyed the Death Star.

Speaking of foreshadowing, Luke was raised by Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru, as Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Pierce played in the prequels. In A New Hope, it’s fair to say that the unfortunate couple got so hot that Owen begged Obi-Wan to leave the boy alone. Edgerton is an award-winning Australian actor, writer and director, best known for Animal Kingdom, The Gift, Love and The Great Gatsby.

help me, Obi-Wan

But when it turns out that it wasn’t Luke who was threatened, the show caused some shifts. Echoing the opening of A New Hope, Obi-Wan receives a holographic message asking him to help Princess Leia. This time it’s his old friend Bail Organa, played by Jimmy Smith, who also reprised his role from the prequels, and his wife Breha.

Charmingly played by Vivien Lyra Blair, young Leia is a lively doll who’s more interested in taking her android Lola out into the woods to spaceship locations than royal duties. Her relationship with Obi-Wan reminds us of the tough guy/cute kid dynamic The Mandalorian, but more importantly, we’re going strong Leon: The Professional vibes. It’s no coincidence, as Natalie Portman starred in Luke Besson’s hit 1994 film right after she played Padmé Amidala (Luke and Lay) in the Star Wars prequels. Ya’s mother, and Anakin’s beloved) years ago.

Who is the judge?

An important step in Palpatine’s plan to build his evil empire was to eliminate the idealistic Jedi Knights who might oppose him. The series begins with Order 66, the moment in Revenge of the Sith when many Jedi are treacherously murdered by Palpatine’s clone troopers. But enough emperors survived to establish a death squad of Jedi hunters: the Inquisitors.

Inquisitors using the dark side have appeared in the CGI animated series Rebels and the video game Jedi: Fallen Order. As shown in the trailer, their in-game fortress will also be on the show. Among the characters we’ve seen before, Rupert Friend brings the Grand Inquisitor of the full moon to life, while Sung Kang plays Fifth Brother.

Uncle Owen confronts Sister Rewa.

Moses Ingram as Rewa, the Inquisitor created for the Obi-Wan series. Her relationship with the Grand Inquisitor reflects the Jedi teaching style of assigning apprentices to Jedi Masters. Like Anakin and many young men, Rewa was ambitious and impatient. She’s also a weakling, and her Force is useful to Imperial officers, but they’ll never let her forget her humble origins. Ingram brings the character to life, and yes, if you can’t see it, I find myself kind of rooting for her. She is a sadistic fascist, but also a multi-layered character. That’s smart writing.

new role

Yes, that’s Vect, the cosmic kidnapper played by Red Hot Chilli Peppers bassist Flea. But the funniest new character is Kumail Nanjiani’s liar disguised as a Jedi. At least he’s proven he has an honest heart, even if it’s good for him.

Obi-Wan quickly finds out that Haja Estree uses magnets and a remote to perform his Jedi tricks, but for a moment I wonder if Haja is actually a real ex-Jedi. After all, when the teenagers are gone, they won’t all become wandering heroes of the oppressed like the ill-fated Nari. Granted, some people will come up with novel and potentially shady ways of living.

that cameo

When Obi-Wan arrives in the murky Daiyu area, he is shocked to meet a destitute veteran begging for scraps.shabby veterinarian by Book of Boba Fett Star Temuera Morrison also plays Boba’s father, Jango Fett, in the prequel. Jango provided the template for Palpatine’s clone army, and Obi-Wan fought alongside many of the same soldiers in the Clone Wars (as seen in the comics). No wonder he looked shocked. There’s also the bitter irony of a soldier being forced into indescribable behavior by an indifferent regime and then dumped (only to be replaced by a group of unquestioned triggers, pushed past this scene in the form of stormtroopers) .

When is the next episode?

Disney drops previous installments to match live events star wars celebration, but future episodes will air on Wednesday. That means you’ll just have to wait a few days until episode 3, which streams on June 1.This is Full release schedule for the rest of the series.

random observation

  • Why can Reva read Haja Estree’s mind but not Owen’s?
  • In the time between the show and A New Hope, 51-year-old Ewan McGregor didn’t look like this, and he still couldn’t have turned grey-haired Alec Guinness. Interestingly, Guinness was 62 years old when he created New Hope, only 10 years older than the current McGregor.Again, apply another character related to george lukasnot years, but miles.
  • In A New Hope, Uncle Owen introduces Obi-Wan in an attempt to stop young Luke: “That wizard is just a crazy old man. Stay away from him, do you hear? He’s dangerous.”
  • In 1977, Uncle Owen was played by McCarthy-era blacklisted and emigrated actor Phil Brown. He died in 2006. Aunt Beru is played by British actor Shelagh Fraser, whose career spanned from the 1940s to his last television appearances in 2000. She died the same year.
  • Not sure if we’ll see Aquileia Rangers hunting for the Merson Pirates, but that sounds cool. Just a fraction of the world-building details on the show.
