Explained: The fight where Johnny Depp had his finger cut off

A particularly uphill battle has featured prominently in the trial against Johnny Depp and Amber Heard over more than six weeks of explosive testimony.

The well-known “fingerless incident” occurred in March 2015, when the couple lived in Australia while Depp was filming the fifth film. Pirates of the Caribbean Franchise.

Depp and Heard each recounted the events that led to Depp losing his fingertips. He claimed when Ms Heard threw a vodka bottle at him it was cut off. Ms Heard said she was not awake when the injuries occurred and claims Depp attacked her with a vodka bottle the same night.

Lawyers for both actors brought in their own medical experts to testify about the injuries and what might have caused them, while Depp’s witnesses described efforts to find fingertips.

The jury was also shown numerous photos of Depp’s injuries, as well as messages he wrote on the walls with blood and paint that night.

Whether jurors choose to believe Mr Depp or Ms Heard’s account of the fight could have a huge impact on the outcome of a case in which both stars claim they were victims of the other.
