Depp vs Hurd trial highs and lows

After weeks of explosive testimony, a jury has finally begun to consider a defamation case between actor Johnny Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard.

Depp is suing Hurd over an op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post in December 2018, in which she described herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.”

Hurd did not mention Depp in the article, but he sued her for suggesting he was a domestic abuser and is seeking $50 million in damages.

Hurd countersued for $100 million, claiming she suffered “rampant physical violence and abuse.”

Below are some of the highs and lows of the blockbuster test.

severed fingertip

During the six-week trial, hours of testimony were devoted to a horrific incident in Australia in March 2015, where Depp was filming the fifth “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie.

Depp had the tip of his right middle finger severed during a heated argument with Heard at his rented house.

Depp said it happened when Hurd threw a vodka bottle at him.

Heard she doesn’t know how it happened, but it may have happened when he smashed the wall phone.

Both agreed despite Depp scribbling cryptic messages with his goddamn fingers on the home’s walls, lampshades and mirrors.

Among the many bizarre incidents cited during the trial was a story about feces by the Depps’ bedside one day.

Depp said he saw a picture of “human feces” in bed after he and Heard got into an argument at her 30th birthday party.

Depp said he heard attempts to blame it on their dogs, but “they were teacup Yorkies and weighed about four pounds each.”

Heard that the dog developed intestinal problems after eating some of Depp’s marijuana as a young child.

As for the dogs, Heard accused Depp of taking one out of the window of a moving car while “howling like an animal”.

The dog was not injured.

witness

Both sides provided multiple witnesses, though rumors of billionaire Elon Musk, Hurd’s ex-boyfriend and her co-star James Franco ultimately didn’t materialize.

But there are also celebrity appearances.

Depp’s ex-girlfriend Kate Moss has dismissed a long-standing rumour that he had thrown the British model down the stairs.

This never happened, Moss said via video link.

Another ex-girlfriend, actress Ellen Barkin, testified that Depp was jealous, controlling, and drinking “at times”, including throwing a wine bottle in a hotel room at one point.

Other witnesses included bodyguards, agents, business managers, psychiatrists, doctors, friends, relatives and even the former doorman of the luxury penthouse building where the couple once lived in Los Angeles.

“I’m stressed out. I don’t want to deal with this anymore,” said goalkeeper Alejandro Romero, probably speaking on behalf of the many people involved in the case.

evidence

Audio and video recordings of the heated, blasphemous argument between Depp and Heard were also used as evidence.

In a video Heard recorded in their kitchen, Depp can be seen yelling, smashing glass cases and pouring himself a large glass of red wine.

Both Depp and Heard have submitted photos of what they claim are the other’s injuries.

Heard’s lawyers also showed pictures of Depp passing out after drinking or taking drugs too much.

Text messages between Depp and various people are shown in which he describes in rude and violent language what he would like to see happen to Heard.

Depp’s lawyers downplayed the words, saying he simply had a colorful style of writing, similar to that of his late friend, the journalist Hunter S. Thompson.

Depp fans

Depp fans line up for hours every day to get the coveted public seat at the trial in Fairfax, Virginia.

While the audience mostly presented themselves, Judge Penny Azkarat threatened to expel them at some point during Hurd’s testimony.

“If I hear one more voice, I will clear the hallway and we will continue to testify without anyone in court,” Azkarat warned. “Got it?”

Depp’s fans also launched a massive social media campaign to support the actor with the hashtag “#JusticeForJohnnyDepp”.

Hurd said she received thousands of death threats. “People want to kill me, they tell me that every day,” she said.

Damaged Hollywood career

Three-time Oscar nominees Depp and Heard both claim their careers have been damaged.

Heard, who starred in one of the highest-grossing films in Aquaman, said she had to fight to keep her role in Aquaman 2 while Depp tried to get Warner Bros. to cut her from the sequel.

Hurd’s legal team introduced an entertainment industry expert who estimated she had suffered $450-50 million in lost film and TV roles and endorsements.

An industry expert hired by Depp said he lost millions of dollars to abuse allegations, including a $22.5 million payday for the sixth installment of “Pirates.”

But Depp’s former agent, Tracey Jacobs, said there was never a formal deal for another “Pirates” movie.

Jacobs also said the actor’s star has been dimmed since 2010 due to “unprofessional behaviour” such as drinking and drug use… AFP
