British authorities ‘will seek formal extradition of Kevin Spacey from US’ on sex assault charges

British authorities are considering the formal extradition of Kevin Spacey from the US on four sexual assault charges unless he comes to the UK voluntarily.

The 62-year-old actor is likely to be detained by US police on behalf of the UK so that he can be formally charged.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) on Thursday approved four charges in relation to the alleged assaults of three men between 2005 and 2013 – following an investigation by the Metropolitan Police.

Former CPS extradition chief Nick Vamos told guardian A formal extradition could take months, and U.S. officials need to analyze documents sent from Britain.

Then, before the actor can be found and detained, they need to feel the “probable cause” of the crime.

“The US Department of Justice will instruct US Marshals to find Mr. Spacey and bring him to federal court. He could always choose to surrender rather than oppose extradition,” Mr. Varmos told the paper.

The former CPS official said it was harder to resist extradition requests in the US than in the UK.

Mr Varmos explained that if he did not dispute the process, it could happen within a few weeks.

He added that extradition offered greater protection because Spacey would only bring charges against him that the U.S. agreed to as part of the extradition process.

If he returns to the UK and is charged, he could soon return to the US if bail arrangements allow him to cross the Atlantic.

The four charges relate to the alleged attacks on three men in London and Gloucestershire.
